Convergence and Transformation: A Whole New Creative World

I wanted to hit this because one of the editors for BoingBoing.net was on the panel, and yes, he was, but I’m not sure what we were supposed to take away from this, other than “mashups” — in this case, essentially, creating one interface for two sets of data — is a good metaphor for “convergence”.

According to the panel, an important and oft-missed element of convergence in web development is the concept of ‘mining’ the past. You can create an application today that has been created in the past, because MySpace is based off some features that Bowienet had success with in the late ’90s, just as Skype takes much from Net2Phone, created ten years earlier. It’s “remixing” the past — the fashion industry consistently does a good job of this, and it can be successful in creating Web apps.
