Thresher Virus (i.e. Drunken Xmas)

stormhoekThis story is a few weeks old, but it’s a powerful one and the repurcussions are just dying down:

A UK wine retailer offers a crazy discount on all their stock, but doesn’t promote the discount in their stores; a blogger associated with a certain wine sold at that retailer puts the discount on his blog; his many readers go nuts and buy tons of wine and tell others about the deal, and his blog and his wine’s website get more hits than that retailer’s site, and the whole shebang ends up on BBC TV; the blogger quotes from the Cluetrain Manifesto when describing the event, now dubbed the Thresher Virus:

“Networked markets are beginning to self-organize faster than the companies that have traditionally served them. Thanks to the web, markets are becoming better informed, smarter, and more demanding of qualities missing from most business organizations.”

Great Xmas story! I wonder if there was a limit on bottles purchased — I bet there are some great holiday parties around the UK …
