Funky Soul & Rare Grooves

At WZBC this morning I was perusing the station’s selection of tasty box sets (including the Nuggets Psych and British comps, the complete Misfits, Crystal Days by Echo and the Bunnymen, etc. etc.), when I stumbled upon what looked like a nicely packaged box of 45’s and was elated to see the title: Funky Soul & Rare Grooves – 1967-1977.   I know very little about funk and have been clamoring for an introduction for the past year or two after spending one saucy night in a local pub where some mysteriously lovely funkiness emanated from somewhere behind the bar (I asked the bartender what was playing and for some funk recommendations, but you know … note to self: write stuff down in these situations).  The reviews are in and this comp seems legit, so I ripped the entire 4 CD set onto a USB keychain and am leaving work right now to critique over a cold one (although a cocktail might be more apt).

After a couple weeks of this, next comp up: a jazz primer (I don’t know much more than the experimental variety, and some 60s virtuosos).
