It’s always fun (maybe not productive) to look back at your past, in this case longingly. Re-reading posts I wrote in 2007/8 brings back a lot of feelings. I remember the headspace I was in. I am reconnecting with what I was interested in at the time. It’s easy for me to forget where I’ve been without a visual cue, here in words and photos. Experiences seem more vivid now.

This is just AN ASIDE.

Revival!

Just logged into this again. My last real post was from 2009. At that time I was getting ready to launch a sound art festival and move away from the Boston area, where I landed after leaving Nebraska for grad school in 2002. Since my last post I have lived in Central America, New York City, and now Chisinau, Moldova. I went back to school and have a master degree in social work, and I am licensed in the state of New York. I got married and have a daughter and am expecting a son.

Other than that, what’s different? I’m less involved in tech (since it’s not my day job anymore) but I’m still a casual observer. I still make music on occasion, even perform. I still take photos, mostly of my daughter. And I stopped writing. The latter is my primary concern and why I fired up this blog again after six years. I started posting on Facebook but stopped; never got into Twitter. Looking to stretch out a bit more.

I’ll still write about sound art since that’s my thing, and tech as it relates to music. I may write about media. I’ll write about any projects I’m working on. I’ll post links. Now that I’m a social worker I’ll use this space to talk a bit about thoughts I’m having, ideas I’m mulling over, literature I’m reading. I want to use this space to get whatever out of my head and on a page. Get back in the practice of putting words together, forcing my brain to be a bit more limber.

Going Dormant?

This site may be going down (or staying down?) — not sure yet.  I’m still preoccupied with the Megapolis Festival (getting ready to announce the lineup and ticketing) and when I’m not doing that I actually try to *gasp* break away from the computer for some real world time.  Speaking of, I just returned from Thailand and will post some photos.  So maybe this ting ain’t all dat dead yet.

Busy, Holidays, Sickness = Time Going By

For some reason I feel the need to redeem myself after not posting for a month. I guess that’s how it goes during times of preoccupation.

Been busy with the Megapolis Festival, even if the website doesn’t reflect that. We’re locking up presenters, performers, venues, sponsorships, and even getting a new logo.  We might try to beef up the website if we have the resources to do so.  Let me know (justing at gmail dot com) if you’re interested in helping with that or know someone who would be.

Other than that I entertained some houseguests, saw a foreign-living friend of mine who I hadn’t seen in 3.5 years, traveled home in time to catch a string of sicknesses, and booked a trip to Thailand.  Plus a bit of radio, jamming, and field recording (with a performance).

Now back to my hibernation den (sickness be kicked).

CBS Radio Buys Launchcast, Looking for Streaming Audio Monopoly

bad-music-webCBS Radio, who already owns Last.FM, is purchasing Launchcast, founded in 1994 by former record executive Dave Goldberg, from Yahoo!.  It seems Yahoo! is selling because it can’t keep up with the ridiculous royalty rates implemented by Soundexchange earlier this year.  Instead companies who stream music from many fringe artists and have reinvigorated (saved?) the music industry are forced to give up their businesses to major media behemoths who can afford those royalties. I assume that means more unsightly advertisements from people you don’t want to hear from.  Painful news indeed.

Megapolis Festival Indeedy!

Baudio-art_systemusy times around here preparing for the April ’09 Megapolis Festival, an art-tastic audio weekend here in the Cambridge/Somerville/Boston.  We’ll have workshops about creating challenging audio works, making hardware to make noises, interacting with your environment in all its sonic glory, and more.  We’re setting up collaborations with local and regional audio groups, most notably the Boston Cyberarts festival in these parts.  Visit megapolisfestival.org for more deets, even though we’re in the very early stages of a whole lot of stages, to sign up for the email list or to figure out where we at on the Facebook.  AUDIO ART TO DA BREAK OF DAWN!
